So it was 32km train ride into Bilbao yesterday and a further 20km out to Portugalete today taking 52km off the total walk, but as I said wandering through industrial and suburban lanscapes is not much fun, so skipped that.
Departed accommodation at 7.45 in Bilbao
and headed to the subway that took about 40 minutes to get to the start of today's walk. John I and a few other firiends had done this same two day walk to Laredo back in 2014 staring in Portuggalete but the cafe we had breakfast then at the start of the walk was gone but we found another cafe and had a great breakfast.
At 9.10 we started our walk and it's still quite urban.
We walked out along a dedicated path for bikes and pedestrians, beside a motorway and eventually hit countryside.
Next we arrived at the north coast and stopped for coffee beside a beech. Then struck out across the beach and up on to an old mining railway track about 50m above above sea level.
and then headed in land and wrapped around the A-8 motorway to climb up a steep spur road to 190 meters and then drop down to sea level mainly on the side of a road with no footpath. Dodgy!
At the top of the incline we caught site of Castro Urdales.
Finally arrived with very tired calves and feet.
Another long day of 7 hours on our feet. Checked into the hotel and decided to head back to the beech for a swim on a bus! Water was cold but just what our legs needed.
